Living in Briarcliff

I am spending a lot of time with my brother and his wife in Briarcliff, a small village outside of Austin, Texas. It is a delightful place. I am here because my fieldwork is only an hour away. Lubbock is 6 hours away and since we are working Mon through Fri, it is too exhausting to drive to Lubbock on Friday after working in the field and turn around and drive back down Sunday so I can be at work by 9am on Monday. So I am spending a few weekends with my brother and sister-in-law. It is a really neat community where deer are ever present . . .
This photo is in my brothers front lawn.

Briarcliff sits just above Lake Travis and is about 30 miles outside of Austin so it is somewhat remote. The landscape is very green and hilly. I am having fun with the brother and sister-in-law . . . Still, I sure do miss my husband.

My husband did come down for Memorial Day weekend, which was also our 3rd wedding anniversary. It was fun for him to meet me at my brothers and stay with me there. On Sunday, we went into Austin to the gigantic Whole Foods (a wonderful grocery store) and had lunch - so many choices! We went to Book People (a wonderful bookstore) and Half Priced Books (a cheap bookstore) and Fry's (a gigantic electronics store), chilled at Opal Devines where we had drinks and recovered from all that walking . . .then we had Ethiopian food at Asters. A delightful day, all around.

That seems so long ago. I am spending another weekend in Briarcliff but should be in Lubbock next weekend. Soon I will be working 10-days with 4-day weekend which is much easier on the commute and will get to at least spend weekends with my husband. Archeology can be tough on relationships!

Ginny, has it been three years already??? Wow. I just can't believe it. You're like an old married lady now. Which means you're married to an old married man. :) Ew. (Hi Sean.)

archeology - wow an imagined love for me, in reality I probably couldn't sit still long enough to brush dirt off an object - I am more bulldozer material I am afraid. what are you digging around in? Indian? have you been to the cave in Marble falls, is wonderful.

Wendy - he is an old man but a cute one!

Ginger-we are excavating a burned rock midden which is a big pile of rocks that had once been used by Native Americans as an oven and/or disposal pile for rocks used in hearths or for stone boiling. They are massive piles of rocks. Tedious diggin for sure! We are working at Fort Hood which has been interesting with IED training going on along the road we take in . . .we were "targeted" by one soldier as we drove out and passed their convoy. During the day we hear explosions followed by gun fire. Some days Apache helicopters fly over head. All in all very entertaining.
